Who can get a card from Brighton District Library?

Residents, property or business owners, and employees of businesses, and students who attend a school  in the Brighton District Service Area in Michigan who do not qualify for a card from a reciprocal library are eligible for a card.

    • The Brighton District Library Service Area in Brighton, Michigan: includes the City of Brighton, Green Oak Township, and portions of both Brighton Township and Genoa Township (must be within the Brighton School District boundaries).

    • Proper Identification: A driver’s license or State of Michigan I.D. card with your current address is ideal. In lieu of these, we will also accept a car registration, utility bill, check, lease agreement as long as it has your name and current address.

    • Proof of Employment: A document that shows both your name and company or school, along with the address.  A letter written on your company/school’s letterhead verifying your employment with them will also be accepted.

Applying for a Library Card Online

  • All online applicants need to provide a scan/photo of their driver’s license or state ID. Once approved, an email will be sent that includes your library card number and PIN information and your physical card will be mailed to the address listed on your ID.
    If you are unable to provide a scan/photo of your ID, please visit the Library to renew or get a new library card.
  • You must be 18 years of age to obtain a Library Card without a guardian sponsor. If you are under the age of 18, your guardian needs to provide a copy of his/her driver’s license and agree to financial responsibility of the Library account.
  • Residents are eligible for a FREE library card. You are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card. If it is lost or stolen, please notify the Library immediately. Residents’ library cards are valid for 3 years and may be used at most of The Library Network member libraries. Business and non-resident student cards need to be renewed each year.
  • If you have a card from a neighboring Library, (Howell, Hamburg, Fowlerville, Pinckney, Northfield Twp., etc.) you will need to visit the Library in person so that your account can be authorized to use the Brighton District Library’s physical resources. Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy are not available to residents outside of the Brighton service area.

Renewing a Library Card Online

  • All online renewal requests require a scan/photo of your driver’s license or state ID. Once renewed, an email will be sent that includes your new expiration date. If you are unable to provide a scan/photo of your ID, please visit the Library to renew your library card.

Changing your account PIN

  1. Click here to access the library catalog page.
  2. Click on Log In located in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Enter your library card number and current PIN.
  4. Click on Your Account and then Library PIN on the left side of the page.
  5. Enter and confirm your new PIN. Please note: PINs can only be composed of numbers – no spaces, letters, or special characters such as @, $, etc. PINs must be a minimum of 4 characters and a maximum of 6 numbers long. They are not case sensitive. If you wish to use the Library’s toll-free telephone renewal service, your PIN must be a four-digit number.
  6. To finalize the change, click “Save“.

Online:  Fines and charges over $5.00 can be paid online through the My Account tab on the  Library Catalog.

Lost and Damaged Materials

Borrowers will be charged full price of all materials deemed to be damaged beyond repair or lost. Per Library policy, material replacements are not accepted. In addition, a $5.00 processing fee will be applied to each lost or damaged item. Accounts with replacement charges for LOST material that reaches $25.00 will be automatically submitted to a collection agency.

You are responsible for all materials borrowed on your card. It is expected that items will be returned in a timely fashion. Overdue fines on late material should be paid promptly. Prompt payment on lost or damaged material is also expected. Please be aware that the Brighton District Library uses the services of a collection agency.

BDL Is Fine Free!

As of January 1, 2022, the Library will stop charging overdue fines for most Brighton materials.

Other Fine Free FAQs

You are still responsible for fees associated with the replacement of lost or damaged materials on your account. Items are considered lost on the 21st day overdue and users will be billed replacement fees for those items at that point. Damaged materials are also assessed a replacement fee. If the item is not paid for or returned, the account will be referred to a collection agency and a non-negotiable $10 fee is assessed to cover costs we incur pursuing collection action.

Your card will be blocked when one or more items reach 21 days overdue.

Due to the high replacement costs, these items will still incur a fine of $5 per day overdue.

Yes! Lost fees will automatically be removed from your account and you’ll be back to borrowing.

Overdue fines assessed for late materials belonging to Brighton District Library have been eliminated and removed from accounts as of January 1, 2022. However, patrons who have lost or damaged materials will still need to settle their account to reinstate borrowing privileges. If you have overdue fines for materials borrowed from another library, those fines will remain on your account. The easiest way to find out if you have a remaining balance is to login to your account at catalog.tln.lib.mi.us or visit the Library.

Renewal Options

Introducing Auto-Renewals Starting October 1, 2020, materials checked out on your card will automatically renew before their due date, saving you time and late fees.

Most items may be renewed a maximum of two times.
No renewals are allowed on any item that is on reserve for another patron. Items owned by other libraries are subject to their renewal policies.

Auto-renewals will occur 3 days before an item’s due date. You will still receive your full loan period, as the renewal period is added at the end of the original loan.

If an item cannot be renewed, you will receive a due date reminder by your chosen notification method (email, text or phone). Please return items by the due date so that other library patrons can enjoy them and to avoid accruing late fees.

Items will auto-renew if:

  • The item does not have holds 
  • The item has not reached its limit of 2 renewals 
  • Your account does not have blocks preventing renewals 
  • It is an item that is eligible for renewals 

Online Renewal  You may still manually renew items if you would like:

  • Login to My Account (you will need your card number and PIN).
    Click the “Patron Record” button to view the list of items that you have checked out.
    You can either put a check mark in each box for items you wish to renew, then click on “Renew Selected Items”, OR you can simply click on the box “Renew All.”
