Developed by the American library Association, Brighton District Library has adopted Every Child Ready to Read 2nd edition as a model for all early literacy programming. For more information on this model, please visit http://everychildreadytoread.org
Every Child Ready to Read is based on the following principles:
  • A parent is the child’s first and most valuable teacher.
  • Getting ready to read begins at birth.
  • Reading is an essential life skill.
  • Play provides a wide range of benefits and opportunities for a child getting ready to read.
What is Early Literacy?
  • Early Literacy is what a child knows about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write.
  • Parents and caregivers play an important role in developing these pre-reading skills.
  • Through simple daily activities children can practice the skills needed to get ready to read, write and listen.
