Computing
at the Library
The BDL has
5 catalog machines and 28 public workstations. Library workstations provide access to:
the
Internet, online public catalog, online searchable databases, EnCarta, Irfanview (basic image editing sofware), Word XP, Access XP, Excel XP, PowerPoint XP and Publisher 2000. All machines also have a
USB port, floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, and headphones. 3 workstations have attached scanners and DVD burners.
Computer workstations
are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons are limited
to one hour; time may be extended
if there are no others waiting. Patrons may sign on to a computer with their library card and PIN number or using a visitor pass. Visitor passes are available at the Information Desk.
Brighton District
Library also provides Internet access for patrons with their
own laptops. There is an ethernet connection in 2 of our group
study rooms
to plug in your computer. We also provide wireless Internet access throughout the building
for patrons with an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless card in their laptops. See
full wireless access details.
Any patron under 17 using their library card to sign on to any machine has filtered Internet access. All computers
used to access the Internet in the Youth Services and Teen areas
are also filtered. Wireless Internet is filtered by default. Access to unfiltered machines is limited to individuals
18 years of age or older or minors who are accompanied by a parent
or guardian, per Public
Act 212. Consult the library's Computer
and Internet policy for complete information. To have unfiltered wireless access, talk to a librarian at the Information Desk.
Printing is
available; the cost to print is $.10 per page for black and white,
$.50 per page for color. At this time printing is not available to wireless users.
The Automated
Services department has 10 laptops and offers training, tutoring and written instruction
to assist patrons
in the use of the computing facility, equipment, software applications,
and using the Internet and World Wide Web. Consult the
class calendar for training class information.
The BDL website
is designed and maintained by Automated Services staff, the Teen Librarian, Adult Services Librarian and Youth Services Staff.
