Navigating the Web

Web Browers

  • 2 main web browsers:
    • Netscape
    • Internet Explorer

  • Some important buttons:

    • Back - takes you back one page at a time to the last page you were at
    • Forward - takes you forward to the page you were just at
    • Go - shows you a list of the websites you've been to
    • Bookmarks - a way to save a list of web pages that you want to return to

Web Addresses / URLs

Standard way of describing where you are. Most commonly start with http:// . Different endings mean different things.

    • edu=education
    • gov=government
    • org=non-profit organization
    • net=internet organization
    • mil=military
    • uk=United Kingdom
    • ca=canada
    • each country has it's own ending
Hypertext / Hyperlinks

This is what allows you to move within a page or from page to page. When you move over a link a little hand comes up. Click on that link and before you know it you're all over the place!

Multimedia

The WWW is now able to support all kinds of media:

  • images
  • audio
  • video
  • animated graphics (such as the magnifying glass in the top bar)

Using multimedia is very common now. Just take a look at the Chicken Dance webpage.

To see the latest new technology look at this site! It is very cool!!! http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3072/camera2.html
