FINDING ARTICLES
List of all periodicals in the databases | Find articles now!

To find an article in a magazine, newspapre or journal on a specific topic you must use an index. There are many different indexes, some are online, some are in books, some are on CD-ROMs. Below is a list of indexes the library has purchased and are available either on the Internet or from library computers.

INDEXES AVAILABLE FROM THE INTERNET

The full-text article databases below are available online from home to residents with a library card. If you do not have a library card, you may also use these databaseses from the library computers. Notice that there are links to cheat sheets to help you use these databases.

FirstSearch
WHY USE? 65 general and scholarly subject-specific databases are in FirstSearch. Many of the indexes, but not all, have full-text articles that may be viewed, printed or e-mailed. No images are included in FirstSearch indexes. Use to find full-text articles, citations, and/or library items all over the world, depending on which database you are searching. Also good for for scholarly research.

2 MOST USEFUL DATABASES IN FIRSTSEARCH:
FirstSearch contains many other specific indexes useful for doing academic and non-academic research. Please see the list of databases.

  • WorldCat - Contains catalog records from all OCLC member libraries all over the world, with primary emphasis in U.S. Many items can be interloaned. Contact a librarian for further information about interloaning.
  • WilsonSelect - A full-text general index with articles in science, humanities, and business . Contains articles from over 800 popular magazines and journals. Coverage starts from 1994.
InfoTrac
WHY USE? Consists of several datatbases with many millions of articles from both popular and scholarly publications. Many magazines are indexes from 1980s to current articles. Easy to use, this is a first stop to find articles.

DATABASES IN INFOTRAC:

  • General Reference Center Gold - A full-text article index with articles on most topics. This is another excellent place to start on almost any topic. Contains articles from both scholarly journals and popular magazines.
  • Health Reference Center Academic - Find scholarly articles and resources on: fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health and safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs, etc.
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center - Find consumer-oriented magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on a full range of medical, pharmaceutical,and health topics. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases.
  • InfoTrac Custom 120 Full Text Newspapers - a searchable full-text index of the last 12 months of 120 newspapers from all over the U.S and also includes some international coverage. No longer includes any Detroit newspapers.
  • Ancestry Plus - Contains over 1.2 billion records in over 3,000 databases. This is the most comprehensive online resource for conducting genealogical and local history reserch. NOTE: ONLY AVAILABLE FROM LIBRARY COMPUTERS
SIRS - FOR KIDS
WHY USE? SIRS Discover is a wonderful database for young researchers. SIRS is useful for writing reports and researching projects.

Electric Library Elementary - FOR KIDS
WHY USE? Electric Library Elementary is an for elementary school children and teachers. It is a full-text database with articles from children's magazines, a few adult magazines, reference books, newspapers, pictures, maps, and news transcripts. It is easy to use and and search.

Reference USA (formerly American Business Disc)
WHY USE? Useful for finding information on companies and individuals in the US. Can find company address, phone number, number of employees, credit-ratings, and subsidiary/parent companies. Also contains individual consumer information: name, address, phone number, household income, value of house.
Poetry Finder
WHY USE? Great database for finding a poem or biographical information about an author. Is searchable by poem's title, first line, and author.
Value Line
 WHY USE? Important resource for researching specific stocks and funds. Updated weekly. Password protected, must ask librarian to log in.
Forms-on-File
WHY USE? Resource for finding legal and consumer forms for print-out or download.
Encarta Encyclopedia
WHY USE? Resource for finding general information to print or download..
