1997 Service Contract (New!)
The Brighton District Library Board of Trustees is investigating library service in our district and looking for ways to address what we consider under utilization of library services within Green Oak Township. The Brighton library board of trustees are in a fact-finding and idea generating process to discover how best to serve everyone in the library's district.
The Brighton library boards' primary principle is that any decision about how to serve the library district will benefit residents and will not detract from library services. Nothing has been decided but there has already been some misinformation circulating.
1. How are library services currently provided to Green Oak Township ?
Green Oak is part of the Brighton Library district. Since 1997, Brighton District Library has contracted with Salem-South Lyon District Library and Northfield Township Library to allow residents who live near those libraries to use them.
2. Why has library service to Green Oak become controversial?
During a strategic planning process it became apparent that population has grown and shifted in Green Oak Township, and improvements in library services were necessary. This led us to examine all aspects of our services including the existing service contract. The statistics of library usage by Green Oak citizens convinced us that the township was underserved with the current contract.
3. Will I be charged a fee if I use the SSL?
If a fee is charged, it will not be charged by Brighton District Library. A fee for using the Salem-South Lyon District Library will be the decision of their board. Brighton District Library is committed to providing local library service without fees.
4. What kind of changes are being considered, and how will that affect my library service?
Some immediate changes have already occurred but more are planned in the near future. A drop box was installed at the township hall and children's programs have been offered at the hall. A bookmobile is currently being used to service the farther regions of our district. Another service option
under consideration for the future is a satellite library.
These actions are intended to provide greater geographic convenience, access to library service and programs of high quality, with the backup of the Brighton Main library, and resources of the 65 libraries in The Library Network consortium.
