Customer Satisfaction Survey, 2000

The BDL conducted a customer satisfaction survey in early January 2000. The survey was randomly distributed to people in the library. The survey asked "In general, when you ask for assistance from a staff member at [department name], how would you rate the service you received?" Users were asked to rate the service they received ("Very Satisifed," "Satisfied," "Not Satisified," or "Don't Know/Don't Use") at the Adult Information Desk, Youth Information Desk and Circulation Check-Out Desk. There was space below each question for comments. At the bottom of the survey users were asked "Do you have any suggestions for improvement of our facilities, services or programs?" and, "Are there any popular magazines we don't currently have that you would like us to offer to our patrons?"

The library received 275 responses to the survey. One respondent did not answer the department service rating question and only provided a suggestions comment. A total of 274 responses were tabulated. Overall 75% of the respondents said they were "Very Satisifed" with the service they received at the Brighton District Library. The results are summarized in the two tables below.

Service Rating Very Satisfied Satisfied Not Satisifed Don't Know/Use
Adult Info Desk 192 (70%) 61 (22.3%) 2 (.7%) 19 (7%)
Youth Info Desk 148 (54%) 49 (18%) 0 (0%) 77 (28%)
Circ Check-Out Desk 195 (71%) 63 (23%) 0 (0%) 16 (6%)
Overall 535 (65%) 173 (21%) 2 (.2%) 112 (13.8%)

The service rating, if the service was actually used (removing Don't Know/Use responses) results are:

Service Rating Very Satisfied Satisifed Not Satisfied
Adult Info Desk (255 responses) 75.3% 24% .7%
Youth Info Desk (197 responses) 75% 25% 0%
Circ Check-Out Desk (258 responses) 75% 25% 0%

COMMENTS SUMMARY

General Comments
  • I have been using the library on a regular basis and staff is always helpful. I especially like the availability of new books. Brighton has a great library and I see it getting better all the time.

  • It's a great library and a great asset to the community.
  • Fine as is.
  • Everyone is very pleasant and helpful. Thanks.
  • Think you're doing a great job.
  • You have made marvelous progress. No suggestions now but I'm sure you would welcome one when I have it.
  • Have been happy with current facility & service
  • I've been satisfied every time I've visited this library
  • Wonderful people!!
  • I have always been able to find the books, cd's etc. as I need them. I have signed up for the Internet class. Looking forward to this class. Any others in the future.
Service Comments
  • Would it be a bit cheaper & easier to call when reserved or requested books arrive rather than mail?
  • Use a phone call before sending an overdue book to collections
  • Fix your computer programs for tracking books. I am frequently charged for past due books even though I returned them early.
  • I really, really hate fines. It doesn't go with the lovely atmosphere of the library. Fines are for people who drive while drunk or break windows, but for overdue books? No. I would prefer to pay $20 per year, every year, once.
  • The front desk should not also be in charge of fielding phone calls-it really backs up patrons standing line.
  • The "Help Wanted" sections of Sunday papers should be held behind the reference desk- people steal them!
  • Need longer time for magazine borrowing (2 weeks)
  • Longer period for new books (2 weeks perhaps)
  • I love your 3 week check out policy and being able to renew interloan books is great!
  • Where do books disappear when the say available?
Automation, Internet & Equipment Comments
  • Sometimes I have trouble using the database
  • Procure a computer program which is easier to use when looking up books, either by author or title
  • The web site isn't specific to what's at the Brighton branch
  • Would be nice to be able to check availability of a certain book on Internet
  • Need more copy machine-only 1 is working
  • Get another printer to help direct the flow of printouts for patrons.
  • I wish the video check out (self-serve) worked consistently. We inevitably have several videos that won't discharge properly, which necessitates a stop at the Circ desk.
  • Just computer problems often, but you know that
Facilities Comments
  • Food bar
  • Clean the bathrooms more often
  • Purchase better roofing material
  • The group study rooms are very cold, esp. the corner room. The radiators need to be turned on.
  • Since you've had the rooms they are becoming popular with everyone due to the fact that when I come here I can never get a room and the tables are always taken since you only have 3 in a quiet, serene place. The 3 in the main room are in a heavy circulated place-it's very hard to concentrate and they are usually taken anyway. You should find more room for more tables- there are rooms in the child area-are they open for public? If they are there should be a sign somewhere-library is a refuge to study but there never seems to be enough tables!
  • Always if possible keep expanding. Definitely need more study rooms.
Children's Services Comments
  • The programs for young children are wonderful! The Youth Services dept. is great!
  • More children's storybook hours
  • More frequent children's programs age 3.
  • I am looking for a story hour for my child on Saturday mornings, because I work during the week.
  • More children's programs, they are often full.
  • More, longer children's story times
  • Please provide pre-k/K story time in the p.m. for those children in school during the a.m.
  • More children's programs! Story times during the year!
  • Offer more programs for preschool children
  • Offer programs where more than 1 child can attend
  • Offer more programs outside i.e. last year there was a "mini-Olympics" which was a big hit
  • Allow bigger (more) programs cause they fill up quickly
  • Love the children's programs you have!
  • I wish there were children's programs in the afternoon. Mornings we have pre-school and Bible study.
  • Perhaps an advertised home school "hour" i.e. children's hour or teaching in a specific subject.
  • Put all the kids series books together so I can find them.
I feel the children's books that are series (American Girl, Arthur, Babysitter Club) should all be kept together regardless of author, it's much easier for the kids to find them. Also, for large series like Babysitter Club if they are kept in numerical order it's easier to find the next one you're looking for.
  • Keep some of the old children's book that are well written-don't replace them.
  • Maybe a poster listing subjects w/call numbers
  • We love the children's videos-great selection & borrowing policy. I would like to see more book w/cassette packages.
  • More children's videos > Maybe a larger variety of children's videos
  • Update some of the children's videos-they're kind of old & dated.
  • Are there travel videos for children? (explore other countries)
  • Put video limit sign at children's video section
  • We've listened to all the books on tape. Could we get Bible stories on tape for children?
  • We do still travel to Livonia for their much larger selection of children's books on tape. I would like to see more audio tapes.
  • May of CD's in Youth Dept. scratched.
  • Have more CD-ROMs for kids learning available for check out
  • We would like all the computers in the children's section to be for use by the computers.
  • Gazebo or cuddle corner for children's area
Adult Services Comments
  • Better selection of books on tape
  • Update books on tape with newer selections
  • Your audio book library is getting much better. Thanks.
  • More audio books
  • I mostly take out books on tape. Any more to choose from would be appreciated.
  • More unabridged books on tape
  • The qtr. books on tape list that is sent out: please put the full authors name & if it is condensed or unabridged.
  • There can never be too many audio books/CDs, although the selections are very good. I would like to see less of the abridged version on tape.
  • Cassette players to listen to audio books at the library
  • Newspapers on microfilm more organized
  • Need additional books & additional copies of bestsellers
  • More books
  • Get more books
  • Need more adult fiction & nonfiction books
  • We could use more books on each subject. Sometimes it's difficult to find books when several reports are due.
  • Definitely need more arts related books, you are missing even very basic art history subjects
  • More music instruction books, i.e. more how to play.
  • Maybe Spanish/English books (more of a selection)
  • Would like more "up to date" or recent music CDs
  • Music classics CD's need to be put in packaging so won't get scratched. More CD-ROMs
  • Put all fiction together
  • Fiction books hard to find
  • Minor problem but I've found a number of books mis-shelved
  • Have a separate section for oversize books
  • Sheet on how to use the Dewey Dec system
  • How about more classes in your nice community rooms? Health, cooking, life styles, exercise, etc.
  • Perhaps a newsletter, book clubs, movies
  • Cloth bags for sale to carry books
